    Not too mysterious any more. A professor at MIT who is in both archeology and materials science at MIT reproduced it.[1] Copper, silver, and about 15% gold. Unfortunately, the document with the actual process is paywalled.

    Part of a long, long history of making stuff that looks goldish.
