The latest bizarre “suggested post” trend I’m seeing is posts from attractive young women in groups like “Roommates in Boulder” or “Backpacking in New Zealand”. Predictably, the comments are full of creeps. I assume that since I’m seeing them and I have nothing to do with those places, they are being broadcasted all over the world. The posts have legitimate comments too, so I’m assuming these are real groups and not just sly OnlyFans ads.

I realize these aren’t private groups, but the gross thing is that they are being selectively pushed by the algorithm to people who otherwise would never see them. And it’s only young women.

With all due respect - who even cares? Facebook has been an unmoderated shitshow for like a decade now. If you're still torturing yourself by using it (or any social media for that matter) then you deserve whatever fucked up regurgitated TikTok garbage they get paid to make you watch.

So many people on HN come here to piss and moan about e-celebrities and websites they hate - why can't you self-moderate and just leave it alone? This stuff exists everywhere, Hacker News is not an ICANN-certified internet janitor that can snap their fingers and make it go away. People don't care about your broken algorithm or least-favorite Twitter profile. The only person empowered to report this content and deprive Facebook of ad revenue is you, and thus far you've established a pattern complaining about the state of privately-owned content platforms.

The problem with this fatalistic approach is that refusing to participate hasn't been effective at preventing or stopping real world problems that come back and hit you anyway.

At a bare minimum, a portion of those social-media people are voting, and it's not practical for me to create my own nation or pocket universe.

      Why all of the aggression?

I use it for what I use it for and want to talk about what I see on there with other technically minded people.

Well leave it there. HN is not the internet police, and I'd guarantee you that >95% of us don't use Facebook in the first place.

I like this post. Complaining about Facebook is pointless but complaining about people that complain about Facebook is a bottomless font of immense value
